Did you know that sand dollars are marine animals? Seriously!
A living sand dollar is brown, dark tan or even purple with many tiny moving brown spines covering its surface.
The white sand dollar, with its smooth and hard shells, that you typically find washed up on the beach are no longer living. Therefore, you are more than welcome to pick it up and keep it as a souvenir.
Remember, most beaches and state parks have strict rules against taking any live sea life from their home. Please familiarize yourself with local laws and regulations before removing anything from our precious beaches.
